Bad action ---> shame ---> regret.
On a good bad day.
I think we can feel shame when we have remorse for something wrong we have done and do not believe we can be forgiven. Others can shame us through their harsh words or demeaning actions, or we can personally feel ashamed of something we've done wrong, or perhaps just perceived having done wrong or not up to snuff.
I think we can feel regret for something done that shouldn't have been done, but also something we wish we had done but never did. All of those "What ifs...?" in life. This happens when we don't have a restfulness in circumstances being exactly as they ought to be, because of the sovereign protection and redemption of God.
Great question. I'll have to think on that one for a while.
I left my answer to this question on my blog. It was a real thought-provoking question, Erin, and I am glad for it.
